A balanced alkalinity and calcium supplement for saltwater aquaria   Description Calcium Hydroxide (also known as Kalkwasser) is a balanced additive that supplies both calcium and alkalinity to the aquarium in the same proportions as they are taken up by corals.  This makes it ideal for replenishing and maintaining levels and keeping them in balance.  It is also very economical, with 100g making over 65 litres of saturated solution.  However, the preparation of kalkwasser is more involved than other additives, and the resulting saturated solution is caustic with a high pH and so must be handled with care.  Because of this we only recommend kalkwasser for use by experienced aquarists. TheReef® Calcium Hydroxide provides aquarists with exceptional value for money compared to other brands, offering an unbeatable combination of performance for price.*                     Guidance Note: Because Kalkwasser adds both calcium and alkalinity it cannot correct existing imbalances between the two.  If levels of calcium and alkalinity are unbalanced you will first need to adjust them using either TheReef® Calcium or TheReef® Alkalinity as appropriate.  (For an explanation of the relationship between calcium and alkalinity please download the provided article.)    Once calcium and alkalinity are balanced Kalkwasser can then be used to raise and maintain levels in future.  You can determine how much Kalkwasser you will need to add by measuring the existing calcium level and comparing this to your desired level.  Natural Sea Water values for calcium are around 410-450ppm while 1 litre of saturated solution added to 100 litres of aquarium water should raise calcium levels by around 9ppm, and alkalinity by around 1.1 dKH.    To prepare a saturated solution mix 6g (2 teaspoons) of Kalkwasser powder in 4 litres of pure water and leave to stand for several hours.  A white precipitate may form on the base of the container – it is the clear calcareous water above that should be removed and dripped SLOWLY into an area of the aquarium or sump with high flow.  Do not mix with or use within 1 hour of other supplements.  Do not raise calcium levels by more than 25ppm a day.         Available sizes             S.R.P. £9.99
